Re:Maddie case shelved - 2008/07/22 09:39
I agree JC but I'm not a conspiracy theorist so whilst I do think the Establishment prefers not to publicise the thousands of successful appeals and the incompetence of the authorities, there are enough "data files lost" type stories to imply that Editors are motivated by circulation rather than obedience.
"Is it a good story?".
The problem is that even Editors, reporters and proprietors - in fact, all of us too - hate the idea that the system is broken. It disturbs and worries us. As a result, subconsciously we bury or lessen or ignore these stories.
But I genuinely feel the time has arrived when too many are noticing. Even Cameron is speaking "accountability".
The dam is bursting and I think the Barry George verdict could smash it open. I really felt Sally Clark's death might do it, but it didn't.
