In this case it is a collective urge for hate figures combined with a salacious interest in paedophiles that is being pandered to. To justify it, the Sun wraps it all up in an insincere 'moral' coat. Gary Glitter has become like Emmanuel Goldstein in Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' ie someone for the lower orders to rant at.
