a n amazing comparison that reflects the dangers of today :
One thing that is now happening in the USA (and UK if ITK etc have their way) that happened and signaled the beginning of the collapse of the Roman empire.
Rome had a burgeoning middle class of merchants & paid workers. Gradually they became poorer and poorer as slavery increased- taking the jobs & work of much of the lower middle class which affected the upper middle class and so on.
The USA had a thriving middle class that boomed after decades of Roosevelt's New Deal (socialism and often far more generous that Europe) which began to be dismantled by Reagan and every President since including both Democrats & Republicans ( Clinton was areal swine) with cheap labour abroad now taking those jobs.
also why sane US billionaires are terrified of an imminent collapse of capitalism.
All a blueprint adopted by New Labour & the Tories (begun under Maggie)
My solution?..get your kids to learn Mandarin. ..the New Empire : Russia / China/ South America
You cannot keep your workers well paid when so much cheap labour keeps arriving, both legal and illegal.
When socialist Blair introduced the minimum wage back in 1997 the economy boomed, when the same man let the floodgates of immigration open in 2004 wages started to fall, and soon after we got the recession.
you are making my point for me but of course it is a highly complex and economies are difficult things to manage.
But who of today's politicians goes beyond cheap 'feel good' slogans or 'let's blame someone (the unemployed chavs) etc etc.
Ideally a country should aim to boosting the Middle Class as that is the only way an economy can succeed and 100s of years have amply demonstrated that.
Which is why China is the New Miracle- 10 years ago it had 50 million Middle Class- today it has over 100 Middle Class citizens. Same same Russia but not as much but getting there. |

... well, its closer to full time work than just staying in bed (and keeps the litter off the streets)
But it's not work, you might as well bring the FJF back in to action.
I could do IDS and Ester job blindfolded.
I'm gone to Andorra for just a few days and ITK thinks he can win an argument behind my back
Greetings Andrew, it's much better out here than Margate
