Interesting and informative, Hedda.

Just reading a Humphrey Bogart biography.

Seems to owe his career, and some parts, to Lesley Howard - of Gone With The Wind fame.

Know anything about any of that?

I'm far too young !! Leslie Howard did look like he may have been as gay as a bandicoot.

The African Queen.
...one of my favourite all time films and the sort you don't watch for a years but is never boring when you watch it again and still quite gripping.

Possibly the best casting of all time with both characters superb.

hedda I've lost it now but I read the very best biography of Marlon Brando written by Tennessee Williams' nephew who began working & traveling with Brando as his assistant for many years at the time of Streetcar on Broadway.

What was amazing was Brando's Equal Opportunity Star Fucking at the time when he became such a celebrated star (before his movie career) whether it was getting blow jobs from Sir John Gielgud or Marlene Dietrich.
# he was particularly impressed by Dietrich as like a good German Frau she cleaned his kitchen floor afterwards.

At the same time he began an off /on affair with budding star James Dean but got sick of stubbing cigarettes out on his chest which was apparently a turn on for Dean.

Apparently the greatest love of Brando's life was the incredibly handsome French actor Jean Marais who he met while hanging around with Jean Cocteau when he holidayed in Europe after Streetcar.

While Brando was a true bisexual it's said when Marais died in 1998 Brando was inconsolable and wouldn't come out of his bedroom for 2 weeks.
Barney Opened on Broadway 70 years ago, making an immediate star of 23 year old Marlon Brando - the choice of author, Tennessee Williams.

A massive success, it soon left NYC to tour the entire country - changing US theatre and movie performances for ever.

The movie was even more popular, getting 12 Oscar nominations - winning four. Not for Brando though.

Humphrey Bogart won Best Actor that year for The African Queen.

They don't make 'em - like they used to...
