Randall	That goes all the way back to Ancient Greek drama and virtue ethics. It was thought that a virtuous personality would manifest itself physically in the beauty of the person. Likewise, evil character is accompanied by evil visage. Roald Dahl included a discussion of this very idea in The Twits, brilliantly illustrated by Quentin Blake. Occasionally, we get a dashing villain, whose good looks are just a disguise. It's a deliberate inversion device, as a play on the well established good/evil inner/outer duality. Dracula and Grendel's Mother are good examples.
