wyot I agree Rick but think that while the scientific community will be evolving and have no concensus early on how to tackle this, if we had not had 24 hour rolling media coverage terrifying the nation into believing that millions will die, then politicians may have felt free to follow common sense.

Like in Sweden.

Instead, they felt they had to look tough and in doing so panicked.

Now their careers are still of course more important to them than the truth. The truth is they got it horribly out of proportion.

But how to move forward without admitting they have destroyed the country?

This is very important because the panic has now killed more than the virus, and the number of deaths rises daily.

Easy for a humble and principled human being to do:

Admit the catastrophic error, inject confidence into the economy by promising no further lockdowns (including localised) unless something dramatically new is discovered about the virus, stop quarantines from abroad.

Admit masks are in place to try and give confidence to a traumatised populace and get them in shops again; rather than anything to do with health.

Admit they openly set out to frighten us but spent so much energy doing so they forgot about all the vulnerable in care homes and left them to die.

Offer clear and unambiguous apologies.

Resign and promise never to darken public office again. This should include any of the opposition that colluded in this tragic farce.
Rick The Opposition has been appalling throughout: every single time party politics has infected its behaviour, contrary to its claims. If anything goes right - 'We are pleased to see the Government has at last done what we suggested (even though they never did suggest it). If something goes wrong - 'We are quite frankly appalled at the errors...' (even though their contrary suggestions again never happened). Constant retrospective 'I told you so' tosh. The Government has made lots of errors, as have all national governments, because they have been dominated by a scientific community that has no consensus, and a civil service that has no scruples. The system has failed horribly.

As for the public, the idiocy scale has gone off the charts. No intelligence, no common sense. During lockdown, they mainly wore gloves, because gloves represented self-protection. Since lockdown, at the behest of government, they wear masks, because masks represent the protection of others, but they have stopped wearing gloves, even though they represent self-protection. And yet they complain constantly about not being told what to do, AND about being told what to do. And they don't recognise the contradiction.

No one will come out of this looking good at all.

This is truly terrifying isn't it? I certainly won't be travelling there any time soon...

Why bleat on about infection rates; death rates are all that matter surely?

Also infection rates may only tell us how widely and effectively a country is testing.

Stop quarantining and respond maturely to the testing.

See what it is telling us. Loads of Covid out there as there is bound to be - causing a lot of people to suffer a cough for a couple of weeks - but next to no deaths anymore.

We have massively overreacted.

Government have crippled the economy, businesses and jobs.

People walking around like the submissives for their masters and madams. Restaurants given away cheap food but for how long ?

People will not go back to restaurants if food is hiked up quickly.

Schools and education is in the pits.

JK2006 I totally disagree with the conspiracy theorists; it was PanicDemic; incompetence; governments believing media hype and over reacting (latest - Croatia - stupid).
