We see outbreaks of ebola on and off in Africa. It is a lethal and highly infectious virus, as opposed to just highly infectious (covid). Another outbreak is occuring now that requires a modified vaccine:

I agree with you that one outcome of our response to Covid is that millions can't tell the difference between the two types of threat.

So many would now resist a lockdown for ebola if it arrived here (ignoring rules en masse next time) because of our gross over reaction to Covid, when a lockdown would be required or millions would actually die and rotting, pestilential corpses disgrace the streets of London.

(Forgive my Dickensian flourishes at breakfast time...!)

Also we have now ruined our country economically for Covid. What capacity do we have for a hypothetical ebola lockdown? What resources have we left to acquire an ebola vaccine. What ignorant resistance will there be to taking one?

We have been so irresponsible in reacting to Covid like this.
JK2006 The media will of course do the Reverse Ferret and suddenly start pushing the Great Story that the world fell for the stupid hype (not, naturally, ANYTHING to do with the media). But people will still wear masks, wash hands etc (as they always should have done to avoid flu). But wyot is right; social interaction will be permanently destroyed.

Yesterday I had predicted 800 deaths "with" Covid. It was 799.

As the death rate continues to drop (everywhere; check out other countries; even those with huge past death rates are seeing massive declines as the vulnerable all die - as they would have done anyway, 5 weeks later). France - one of the Death Five - had 400 die (half our 799; different ways of coping; limited lockdowns - all restaurants open again - almost no vaccines). Germany - deaths down.

This stupid, hyped virus seems to have a time limit (as vulnerables get used up). It comes in waves (like flu) and will doubtless keep returning (like flu) even though we now have vaccines (how many???).

It's the next one that worries me. The one as lethal as Ebola; as infectious as flu. As hard to find vaccines or remedies as the Common Cold or AIDS or other deadly diseases.

My single biggest fear now is not more lockdowns after too quick openings, but that the way we have responded to this virus has set a precedent and my children will grow up in a society lacking some of the freedoms and restraints on officials that me and my generation have taken for granted.

That idea breaks my heart.

These powers need to be revoked when there is no longer any possible justification for them (i.e post vaccination) or they will be abused and expanded on. Not enough people have read enough history. It can happen here, and is.

Exactly. While Covid and its thousand variants keeps popping up they will always have an excuse.

JK2006 258 deaths today Sunday. Not quite single digits yet but getting there. Half as many as died from cancer.
