Something has gone terribly wrong with the British music industry. Hopefully the BPI or The Ivors or UK Music will approach the BBC to join in the contest to find a UK winner for 2022. When I ran our quest in the mid 90s I involved ALL the music areas as well as the public. We had Radio Two as part of it; we had the final on prime time and a couple of times linked to the Lottery (back then a very popular TV show). I organised free CDs of the final four to be given out by retailers (we gave away a million CDs).
The result? We won with Katrina and Love Shine A Light.
In 2021 we got nul points.

Both Pepsi and Coca-Cola used to promote music and give away free compilations. I had a goodie bag from Pepsi filled with all sorts of promotional for bands, festivals, gigs, compilation CDs, singles, cassette's. However it did introduced me to the UK dance scene.

Yes there's Youtube but we need an open platform when we are out and about it to hear new music with different formula's. Even Virgin Megastore back in the day would throw in free singles from time to time. HMV have the monopoly but when I go to their stores I am only buying what I came in for.

I know there's a big 80's revival at the moment which is not a bad thing, nostalgia is good and it's good for the theatres also. If you look up and the down country for gigs it's mainly stand up, tribute acts (only one worth seeing are Heyseed Dixie), 70's or 80's band or singer (not that I moaning ), you might get the odd 60's band of some kind with one or two original members.

We need to hear new singers and get them in the theatres.
