The most decent original songs / songwriters are in a virtual underground where they have been buried beneath the pile of Simon Cowell rejects. Only a few carefully selected new sounds make it to the big time.
I find myself being thankful for the likes of Youtube and FAB Chart for helping me find fresh, new music which matches the quality of the stuff I used to listen to in the 60s & 70s.
The good stuff can still be found, but you have to be prepared to dig for it.
Welcome to the throw-away generation. Nothing is expected to last very long, not even music. |

I guess as well that today artists are instant 'celebs' thanks to YouTube but I never heard a a decent from any genre in the last year or so. Maybe it's because it's my taste but when will there be an album like Thank Christ For The Bomb, Breakfast In America or Cricklewood Green ? I don't believe everything has been done. |

When travelling on public transportation or in resturants. The kids and youths were talking about music non stop and even told strangers what to buy. Now all I hear today from kids is social media bollocks.
Ed Sheeran just bores me but each to their own. Adele is not my bag and the metal scene is far from good today.
When I go to HMV the sales assistants look lost and they always get Rock and Metal confused with each other.
With Spotify and Deezer they are samplers for me, if like what I hear than I look on Amazon and HMV. |

Just posted this on the Tipsheet (music) Forum but I think the general topic is worth considering here too.
Of course the 60s and 70s were basically my decades of great music; still involved in the 80s (mainly through TV and radio) and even the 90s (the Tipsheet - which still continues here in the Noughties and Tensies). But I think music means less to today's listener. It is now a luxury; nice but not vital. To my generation it was like air or water - essential. The big summer hits this year - 2017, are Sheeran's Shape of You and Despacito. But - whilst they are as good as hits from the past (to me Despacito is simply 2017's Macarena), I don't think they come any longer up there with our 60s and 70s hits. Views? |
