This feature really lasted until WWII - when vaccines and antibiotics arrived, to reduce the affects of disease.
Combat mortality falls into two distinct eras, in the US - the Disease Era (1775/1918) and the Trauma Era (1941/present).
In the latter, stress related illnesses came to the fore - much more than illness/disease.
Suicides exceeded the disease-death toll in Iraq.
Undoubtedly, viruses were spread through the close/mandatory proximity of soldiers.
And this is something that'll have to be readdressed post-coronavirus.
Or maybe, warfare will become less claustrophobic.

Barney, this is just plain silly.
A quick look at Wikipedia tells me that best estimates of all deaths in Vietnam alone (including civilians) is 1,353, 000. Soldiers (US and allied) 282, 000.
Covid is an illness, not a fucking war. Mankind chooses war; we can't choose whether we die or not.
Covid is another illness, like cancer that we just deal with as best and sensibly as we can.
Please look up the term non-sequitir. Stop acting like the bloody media; constantly looking for a "good" story and conflating and presenting whatever you like to get there.
To bat emotive nonsense back at you: would one person in this country prefer one way transportation in person back to The Somme over spending an evening with someone with coronavirus? |

In the USA, coronavirus deaths have now exceeded several recent military conflicts.
Those of the wars in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan - combined.
And are about a third of the US fatalities in WWII - and twice those of WWI.
Many have criticised American policy and Presidents, during these conflicts.
But no other country has lost as many soldiers - in these battles on foreign soil.
Coronavirus however, has won the country's biggest battle - on home soil.
