Yes, this Oscar winning movie clearly showed the church's efforts to cover up the widespread abuse - in the Boston Diocese.
And when The Globe published the stories, the architect - Cardinal Bernard Law - was spirited away to Vatican City
This was to gain immunity from prosecution in the US. As the Vatican - an independent state - has no extradition arrangements with the US, or anywhere else.
For many years - instead of being made accountable for Boston - Law held a highly prestigious Vatican position, and often attended functions at the American Embassy in Rome.

I know that there was quite a lot of child abuse, Barney, but "secretly paying hush money" can also be interpreted as " being blackmailed".  |

I never heard of that movie, I'm not a film buff but I have to watch that.
