Topic History of: Actors in wildly different roles

md I went to see the stage production of Sweeney Todd with Emma Thompson as Mrs Lovatt thinking that only an opera singer could perform the role alongside Bryn Terfel but discovered to my surprise that I was wrong.

I still have trouble believing that Dick Van Dyck is the actor playing Mr Dawes snr in Mary Poppins and Dustin Hoffman, the elderly narrator in Little Big Man.
Green Man Kevin Bacon screams out. He can do heavy dramas like The Woodsman or Mystic River. Portrays a dodgy DJ in Telling Lies in America; then there's Animal House of course.

I add Clint Eastwood but people say it's Clint Eastwood being Clint Eastwood. Who else better to play Philo Beddoe ?

Billy Bob Thornton who is grossly underrated. He did a wonderful Bad Santa and plays mentally ill man in Slingblade wonderfully.

Tony Shalhoub played Antonio Scarpacci a very love struck taxi operator in sitcom Wings ( which is one of my favourites) then played Adrian Monk in Monk.
Jo I recently came across an actor who I didn't realise I'd already seen in a very different role.

I've been watching episodes of the light-hearted US detective series "Monk" recently and Googled the name of the actor who plays Captain Stottlemeyer. He's apparently also known for having played Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs! That's a film I've only seen once and don't plan ever to watch again, not because it's a bad film but because it was so mind-searingly memorable and far too creepy and disturbing for my taste.

Can you think of any other actors/actresses you've seen in surprisingly different roles?
