I wonder if this is part of the reason for the viciousness of people posting comments on social media about Prince Andrew, Ghislaine Maxwell, etc.: they have committed the sin of asserting their innocence.
I think protesting innocence is not the major factor Jo.
Increasingly people like to make themselves feel better about their own unfulfilled lives, and so project bile at any target in order to try and do so. Ironically, their satisfaction lasts about 30 seconds, followed by further reduced self-esteem. And so the pattern repeats - like an addict after a short-term hit.
There is also no longer any respect for the presumption of innocence because that requires nuance (a trial verdict just comes down one way or another on a subjective stream of human behaviour and then the system has to treat the outcome as objective) and patience.
In both cases - transference and immediate gratification - social media is the perfect petri dish for growth. It is hard to see what development might turn this around for mankind.
But - as well as COP 26 - world leaders should be holding summits on this subject; because it has the power to destroy us all. |
