I still remember seeing Cabaret in a seedy movie theatre it wasn't an adult theatre but theatre where homeless, courting couples and horny gay men went. I really like the film of "Fame", but I wouldn't call it a musical. Its a drama with a soundtrack, like Flashdance. People aren't randomly bursting into song on the street. I like Cabaret, but the last version I saw in Wimbledon last year, completely changed the story so that Emcee was the main character and Sally Bowles was reduced to a minor role. They had turned it into an LGBT musical, which I wasn't expecting and would have preferred it in it's original format. I thought Cabaret had LGBT elements to it unless I just found it camp just like the Batman and Robin TV show. Sweet Charity is worse than poking an infected wisdom tooth.
