Feminist responsibility 11 Years ago
Some here still find it painful to ascribe any kind of responsibility to feminists for what is going on.

A typical bbc news link today, the kind that we're seeing nearly every day on the BBC in the manner of Soviet style propaganda :

www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-28134181

The author of the report :

www.mdx.ac.uk/aboutus/staffdirectory/miranda-horvath.aspx

Her stated interests :

"My research focuses on sexual violence from an applied social psychological perspective. My work is informed by a variety of social psychological constructs such as; script theory, sex roles, group processes and negotiative space alongside feminist theory. I also maintain a focus on the broader cultural context in which sexual violence occurs. I have three main strands of research currently: Multiple Perpetrator Rape; the links between men's use of lads mags, their attitudes towards women and paying for sex; the investigation and prosecution of rape."

And there are literally thousands more where she came from and their numbers grow each day...

The problem for feminism is that it gets its moral power from the language of rights that was popularised in the 18th century - and that rests on universalism (ALL women have these rights, anywhere and at any time). But the more recent fashion is to respect other cultures and accept that they simply do things differently. You can't have much moral power if you say 'All women have these rights, unless your culture says they don't'. So feminists are left being confused and/or coy about such issues as the treatment of women in, say, Islamic cultures, and sometimes resort to the most absurd attempts at claiming these subordinated women are in some sense making their own choices. What they can't answer is the fact that women would never have had political rights in this country if the views of contemporary women had been accepted as definitive, as the majority of women were resistant to such rights. So on the one hand feminists still need to be able to say that subordinated women 'don't know what's in their best interests' and on the other hand they're terrified of sounding like they're intolerant of alternative outlooks. Until some honesty and clarity is re-established, the whole movement will remain hopelessly ineffective.
