Re:Should I Be Worried About How I Behaved in the 1970s? 11 Years ago
Thought provoking - and shows the depths to which Britain has descended with this witch hunt.
I know for a fact that what I did during the 60s and 70s - and probably the 80's as well, would land me in the dock nowadays.
I, just as I suspect Rolf and Maxie were, would be bemused as charges of touching someone inappropriately are read out - because it wasn't inappropriate, then. Sex was fun, adventurous and always consensual - although not always legal - even having consensual sex with another man was illegal if he was in the Forces. and those squaddies were readily available.
Times change, and in this respect, not for the better. I have my memories, and cherish them, but how easily they could become charges nowadays if I were rich and famous.
Re:Should I Be Worried About How I Behaved in the 1970s? 11 Years ago
But it wasn't breaking the law - if I touched a young adult on the leg as a 'invitation' to go further, that was normal behaviour, and the person knew how to deal with it.
If I was rich and famous, in today's witch hunt mentality, they would quite probably come forward to complain - because I am not, there is no incentive to pursue it.
However - your suggestion that I 'got away' with it is exactly what I and the article are complaining about! Today's attitudes are simply different.
The Age of consent varies enormously in Europe, with most Countries adopting 14 and 15yrs of age, and Spain 13 yrs of age. Should these 'young lads' have their lives shattered simply because Britain is so backward?

Yes - if they are breaking the law.
The girl has her life shattered by being left with a bastard and no one to fend for her (and there are numerous warning about health effects of young sex - cervical cancer, for one).
Why should we pick up the bill ?
I'm all for "freedom" - what you want is freedom for someone else to pay !

Fascinating reading but even more the comments! Nobody - NOBODY - appears to consider that possibly past events get inflated and exaggerated by time and memory. Something that was not only perfectly acceptable then but would be NOW has become "rape" after years of gradual, subtle improvement.
A hand on the knee (don't laugh - I got 6 months for that) turns into a hand on the thigh and a hand in the pants and then...
Does it? I don't know - you don't know - but how terrifying that our species won't even consider the possibility.

There is another point that you miss out Gnomo ....
The UK has the largest percentage of pregnant under-age girls and the largest number of abortions too.

NOT things we should be proud of.
Despite us paying for free contraception and making it readily available. It seems to be a big fat waste of time and money.

I never thought of my knees and thighs as sexual organs, funnily enough. When did they become out of bounds?
It used to be quite common for someone to grab your leg in a jolly sort of way and I would think nothing nothing of it, unless it was in a seedy sliding- further-up movement, in which case it would be moved without fuss.
Nobody seems to touch each other much at all these days.

Indeed.
In fact, why should the idle brigade bother with taking any responsibility ?
They waste their education - no problem, someone gives you money.
They can't afford a house - again, no problem, a Council gives you one (and makes someone else pay for it).
They waste their money on mobile phones then claim they cannot afford to eat - again, where is the problem? Along comes a "food bank" and gives them food - free !
WHY should they take any responsibility ?
(if they could only work out how to get booze and drugs for free life would be perfect).
Its time we put a stop to this constantly escalating gravy-train once and for all.
If some suffer, so be it - the rest will learn a very valuable lesson.

Wait till you hear this one...
A teenage girl who lives locally is going on a fabulous holiday with her well-off family. It is an island that only has a swish hotel on it, and they are going to be diving mostly. It sounds lovely, but she has asked the doctor for the pill, not for contraceptive purposes, (they don't do that round here) but so she can take the packets back to back and avoid a period ruining the holiday.
A great idea if she was paying, but it was free.
Why is her holiday my problem? And why am I paying towards it? Apparently, this is what "everyone" does if they are going to Glastonbury etc.
