I feel about these as I do about the phone hacking scandal - and I've always felt this ever since I was lucky enough to be "of interest" because I had a hit in 1965. If you're going to do/say/write/communicate something you want kept secret (business deals for example) you assume phones, e-mails, letters in post etc are not safe.

If you don't want anyone except yourself and the person you're doing the deal with to know what you're offering - only do it in person where you cannot be overheard.

If you're shagging someone's wife and are so stupid as to make phone calls, write e-mails or letters - you deserve everything you get because you're stoopid stoopid.

So why should anyone care about security laws?

In the statements Cameron spouted wet truisms but Clegg made great sense. He's far better than the PM.

Surveillance - and snooping - are made so easy these days through the freely available use of Streetview, Google Earth etc. These programs allow anyone to view the houses and locations, of virtually everyone.

All one needs, for example, is the post code of an individual (also easy to obtain) to view sharp images of the property and neighbourhood - from all angles; these are updated regularly, and must be a godsend to investigators and the police alike.

There have been numerous cases where - when a chap is 'playing away' - he has been found out by his car being seen at a particular location, by satellite. The programs are free and often used by estate agents.

However, if someone is prepared to pay a couple of hundred pounds - the images can be in real time, razor sharp and very frequent.
