Shock horror: the sun is out! 11 Years ago
BBC Breakfast news, about 6.30am, and a reporter is doing one of those silly scare stories about how incredibly dangerous hot days are. She confronts two elderly ladies who've just gone for an early morning swim. 'Have you put on your sun cream?' she asks them in a tone that suggests a schoolteacher quizzing her pupils. 'No, you don't need it this early in the day'. The reporter is horrified that they are not saying the right thing, so keeps asking them whether they ought to put on some sun cream. 'You don't need it this early,' they keep saying patiently, 'we'll put some on later,' and then they stroll over to the swimming baths again, leaving the reporter scowling. Good, old-fashioned sense doesn't fit with a media that assumes we're all helpless children ('carry a bottle of water with you everywhere at all times!!!!') but it's a delight to hear.

A station announcement today: 'It is VITAL, I repeat, VITAL, that passengers carry a bottle of water with them at all times in such heat'. We've become a nation of wimps.

Why would you want to put sun scream early in the morning ? The sun is at it's hottest between 1pm to 3pm, BBC have always been bad when it's the silly season.

I rather like "sun scream" Andrew. I thought sun cream/screen was meant to STOP you screaming!

The Essex scene is still in me, we all remember Sun Scream the band, also Sun Scream was a market brand of sunscreen no doubt made in some bloke's shed.

I agree there Pru parents just used to say to us stay out the sun if you can, then we got Super-Soaker double barrel water guns then were we out all day. On the news Pru did they mention drinking too much water is a killer also ?
