Well it took me 20 years but I finally got around to watching Beautiful Thing and what a delightful movie it is. With particularly outstanding performances from the lady who plays the Mum (now in EastEnders I think), the little black girl and the superb hippy boyfriend. I've no idea why it took me so long but I was given the DVD ages ago and only just got around to watching it.

Especially great was the idea of using the magnificent Mama Cass as a plot ingredient, enabling them to include vast quantities of her fantastic music (produced by Steve Barri, one of my favourite but under rated producers, and largely written by Mann/Weill - up there with Goffin/King as the greatest team of composers of our generation).

How strange that society has now changed in its attitude to gays so much (thanks to our 60s generation) that you would, today, have to make the lead characters/heroes paedophiles!

Perhaps Jonathan (Harvey) is working on that film at this very moment.

What do paedophiles have to do with gay people? Without seeing the DVD, this gives the impression that you think they are misunderstood in the same way as gay people were, and society will eventually come around?

Paedophiles are people who are attracted to children sexually Honey; not, in itself, a crime unless you do something about it. I reckon 80% of males would find a mature young person, who looks much older than they are, attractive - if they have not been told their true age.

But "witches" were burned (why? the reasons have faded with time). Likewise Jews (though people seem to be working on that again - I have no idea why the Nazis thought them evil). And Gays.

Watch the film. Imagine one of the boys is 15, not 16. Paedo Perverts would now be the title.

But being attracted to sexually mature people is not paedophilia. (Hebephilia if you are picky) Society using the term "paedophile" to describe a normal biological reaction to a fifteen year old is daft, and trivialises child abuse. It is not the same thing at all.

Yes the misuse of words is a terrible media habit but the fact remains that, mature or not, if someone is "under 14" (Children and Young Persons Act 1933) they are a "child".
