It's a media myth. The vast majority of comedians are no more or less depressive than the rest of us. The percentage who are clinically depressed is no greater than it is for, say, teachers or musicians or mechanics. But only comedians generate pop psychology discussions. It's because there's this simplistic idea that all comedians ought to be constantly laughing and cheerful that makes the isolated case of depression stand out and get over-analysed. There's nothing odd about comedians being depressed (or tired, insecure, occasionally bad-tempered and/or keenly aware of their own mortality). That's just life. That's being a sentient adult. What's far odder are the ones who are always 'on' and happy. That's weird. In fact, anyone who is like that is odd. The Dalai Lama is forever giggling. That's downright peculiar. Robin was a hugely talented man who happened to also be blighted by depression.

Pretty good Pru except you've fallen for the media, like all of us - the Dalai Lama does seem to be giggling all the time we see him on the media but I bet he doesn't giggle all the time.
