In 1996 a UK Right wing newspaper The London Evening Standard digitally replaced a beer bottle with a champagne flask in a photo of senior Left wing MP John Prescott and his wife in a restaurant. The published fake photo was captioned, “Champagne Socialist” and Mike Holdeness of the National Union of Journalists believes this to be the first political abuse of photo-manipulation in the UK. Prescott demanded, and received, an apology and retraction.

Unlike the celebrated Pop & TV impresario and innocent victim of injustice Jonathan King. Released in 2005 after serving time for 'alleged crimes' which he proved had never even happened, King was then grossly misrepresented by a digitally altered image in the disreputable Right wing rag The News Of The World. But victim-survivor King received no satisfaction via a formal complaint to the UK press-ombudsman, nor from an unrepentant News of The world.

However, in an act of perfect 'Karma', the rag has since been proven 'Criminal', closed down, and consigned to be 'erased from history'.
