my friend is an NHS nurse (specialising) with one daughter in a UK regional town. Still needs rent subsidy to survive.
what is your solution ? (apart from taking a Time Machine back to Maggie to convince her selling off state assets in council housing is a huuuuge mistake)
alternative- tip the 'rubbish' out into the street where they will cost more in crime prevention.

So do I.
If someone can be kept (legally) in a police cell (no idea how big they are but they look small on TV) - why not build that kind of "housing" for them?
It will encourage them to do something to improve their lot (instead of expecting everyone else to pay for their luxuries).

hedda wrote: indeed. All housing payments should cease (along with all tax concessions developers get). Property prices & rent would plunge.
ITK would be deliriously happy. Even though his house value had halved.
Simply would not happen, hedda .... we would still have the SAME population, all needing the SAME number of houses (but this way they would have to pay for them !)
It would stop a large amount of property inflation and prices would rise by about the rate of inflation - BUT there will always be a demand (as Britain is a small country rapidly running out of available space).

Maybe not cells, but people were very glad of prefabs once, and managed just fine.

Perspective. Last boom / bust cycle went roughly from 1989 bust to 2007 (18 years) in line with housing market and jobs. Hiccup with blip on dot.com bust early 2000's. So expectation that general prospects increase will continue somewhere between the next 10 to maybe 15 years. For those investing in property last time UK property trembled from peak to peak. Then dropped 25% at the peak. So maybe similar this time or just doubles. So if you buy at the peak and drops just sit tight.
Re ITK comments- people finding the non existent jobs is nonsense. As the increase is expected with the boom / bust cycle and can be expected for the next decade to see unemployment decrease overall. I have never read ever in the last 40 years any real difficulty in employers finding employees other than when there is a sudden shortage in pretty girls with an Oxford first and they have to consider someone else, for example. The they then call it "a skill shortage"
So there will continue yo be a general increase in jobs. But it does not answer the underlying problems. The governments just take credit for something that happens anyhow.
Also, I have noted over the years when big business close sections or the whole business then the employees involved are depressed and are not happy because finding a new job is difficult. If the social system is so great as the comfortable believe. Then there would be parties of the people losing jobs because they could be on the great social system legit. But no it does not happen that way Andrew or someone please explain the meaning of “But it's not work, you might as well bring the FJF back in to action.” Thanks
