He does the right thing - he could not even carry his own constituency (60% voted NO).
The SNP is now a complete irrelevance (and they probably would never have been elected except for disillusionment with Labour - and the Scots could not bring themselves to vote Tory).
If he had carried on he would have been like Rent-A-Gob Farage .... a one-issue politician (whose issue had already been ditched !)
although the Yes vote failed to get up it's put the wind up all parties and they are falling over themselves to give the Scots what they want (except independence). Labour will promise the World & the Tories likewise.
Now all politicians know they must tread carefully in Scotland. The Scots have been unbelievably (typically) canny in this : the YES & NO are ALL winners!
well done Alex !! triple Glenfiddich all round & hold the water.
It does seem true. I'm astonished. I really like Salmon but I think his total dedication has been for independence and now it's clear that only the standard 33% really wants it still (the slight rise was only due to media hype) he is bitterly disappointed and this must be a instinctive (and wrong) reaction.
Yes the vote in his seat was bad especially as Nicola swung the vote in her area over to YES. I'm astonished and shocked and very sad. I think he's really good.

He gave the people of Scotland a say which is rare.

The right thing would have been to at least attempt to be gracious in defeat.

David Cameron gave the people of Scotland a say.
Only because he knew they would vote no.
Try it with the EU referendum.
There won't be one - Cameron won't do one and Sillyband if by any fluke of the electoral system becomes PM certainly wouldn't allow the public a voice on that.

33% ??..the official vote was 45% Yes.
but that's 45% of those who actually voted and we will never know what the others thought. Perhaps the majority of Scots (including those too young to vote)actually do want independence- or visa versa.
Which does go to show "democracy" is not a perfect system and not necessarily the best as always claimed ie : look at Iraq once stable under a dictatorship and now a mess with 100,000s dead under 'democracy'.
Or the UK itself where a minority of people decide who governs..same same in the USA. Until you have compulsory voting you are fucked.
But why has Salmond resigned? there is no logic especially as I predict a renewed & energised Scot's "nationalism".
Of course the NO vote is ITK's & Cameron's worst nightmare as it re-invigorates Labour.

Glorious Socialism
If Milliband did a deal with UKIP on a referendum on the EU he'd be PM at the next election. A deal on supporting each other's candidates would doubly seal it....we could nationalise The Bakewell sweatshop!.....oh the joys....

A complete irrelevance? following the referendum result membership of the SNP has surged making them the 3rd largest party on this island ahead of the Lib Dems. And it was 55% who voted NO. Always first to criticise and always factually incorrect. Ever considered a career in journalism ITK? It seems an obvious next move would be to change your name. In the clouds?
