Brilliant film, but somehow incredibly depressing at the end. Ring of Bright Water was similar in this respect and made around the same time - don't watch the last 10-15 minutes.
Interesting back story about what happened to the lead child actor before he was discovered and then after the movie was completed. Seems to be making spare cash signing dvd's now. A very reluctant leading actor.
One of my favourite movies because I could identify with it. Got on my motorbike a while ago and rode up to Barnsley where it was filmed and had a look at some of the locations. A lot different today of course.
Read the book in school.it was in the form of a script with the class reading out the parts.I was billy.was surprised that there was swearing in it and I had to read it out.I remember being a bit embarrassed.

I remember reading the book in school and like my fellow poster been excited about reading out "swear" words like bastard. Also we were shown the the video in school to accompany an english class.
It was an old top loading betamax and I remember it contains nudity (from the back) of underage boys. Probably quite dodgy to show this today in a school.
It later became one of my favourite films, and alongside Gregory's girl shows the most realistic depiction of life in a comprehensive school in Britain. You can't see the join between this and real life, something you can never say about hollywood films.
