Dear ---------
Thank you for your e-mail addressed to Roly Keating. Due to the volume of correspondence he receives Roly Keating is unable to answer personally. Once they have been read, e mails are forwarded to this department for reply.
This department has a wealth of knowledge about BBC programmes and policies and is experienced in the workings of the Corporation and have therefore been authorised us to reply on his behalf.
I was delighted to read of your interest in 'Monk', however I understand that you have concerns regarding its scheduling. Further I note that you feel a more apposite time would be a midweek slot between 8-9 o'clock.
May I explain that even very popular programmes face competition for a place in the peak time schedule. These placings are limited in number and there can be practical difficulties in timing programmes to meet fixed 'junctions' in the schedule, such as 22:00 on BBC One for news and 22:30pm on BBC TWO for 'Newsnight'. By carefully commissioning programmes that fit around these fixed points we hope to provide a range of subjects to interest the majority of our audience. We always seek to ensure the schedule remains lively and relevant for the audience and that all types of programme are given fair consideration.
I hope that this goes some way in clarifying the situation; however I note that you take a different view. Please be assured that your comments have been made available to the scheduling department as well as senior BBC management. Styles and policies are continually reassessed based on the feedback we receive from viewers.
