I hate all the hype the media throw at us about the bloody thing. A waste of taxpayers money every time and white elephants keep on happening.

I will be watching 2020 Olympic Games just for the cricket if it goes through....it'll be the only FTA international cricket on TV in years.

But by then the way we watch TV will be changing again, who knows if the BBC can still afford the rights.

No. It's all worked out very well actually.

A lot of main events on when people get home from work.

With excellent highlights programs.

So far - a great Games, with the odd blip which happens in them all.

Apparently, 2 women - who I have never heard of - have won something for rowing (which is basically "going backwards")

No doubt we all funded them - and paid for their trip.

Equally no doubt, that if they manage to make any money from "going backwards" THEY will pocket it all - and we will see none.

Can someone please explain what benefit there is to the Country for this financing of self-promotion merchants ????

I am quite sure that the original Olympic ideal was about individual athletes and their "country" was never even mentioned !

Total rubbish from ITK.

Sports have a real place in society - bolstering mind, body and spirit.

Developing self esteem, fitness, teamwork - and even academic ability.

Few our our successful leaders, politicians and business people did not participate - except those caught in war zones, or affected by disability.

With the Paralympics, the latter now succeed, often from a wheelchair...

ITK (and Andrew - welcome back Andrew; give me the address for your box set) always go on about this Spee and we smile patronisingly! Those of us enjoying it (and very proud of our No 3 in the medals league position) are enjoying them immensely.

You CAN'T answer the question, then ?

Why are we not subsidising darts players?
Rock bands ?
Poets ?

You simply follow like sheep - watching because you are "told" to watch ...

First Wimbledon ... then the Euros ... now the Olympics ... you are just doing as you are told. Wasting your life.

Get out more - get a life !

There are hundreds of thousands like you up here.

They are in every field.

They are called sheep ! Baaa !

From one of the sheep ITK; I'm enjoying some games and sports I don't understand at all but just get pleasure from seeing people do their best and some very good commentary explaining it well for me. All that zipping up and down (and sometimes over and out) of the cycling tracks has been thoroughly entertaining.

Apart from all the other benefits - social, health, self esteem, character building etc. - sport make us money.

To ignore sport in life is as silly as saying Socrates and Plato were 'wasting your life' - as they too were fine athletes.

More recently, Einstein was a fine sailor...

Yes - and delighted to be watching the finest athletes in the world.

Participating in nearly 30 different sports.

Like most people on earth, in every country.

4.4 billion watched Beijing; 3.6 billion, London.

Even more than the 2104 World Cup finals - which was only watched by 3.2 billion!

Correction.

5 billion watched the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

That is - 7 out of 10, of all humans on earth.

No doubt, some sheep also watched.

London must have been crowded that day !

Do you have the figures for how many lay on the settee and watch anything - even the test card (as long as it doesn't cost anything) ?

TV is dying ITK any way. There will be no TV licence, subscriptions or Sky Sports in the near future.

On the 27th, andrew, ITV is shutting down ALL its channels (for an hour !) so all the coach potatoes can get some exercise to celebrate the Olympics !

.... 100 yards dash (to the chip shop ???)

'aralympics in crisis as Brazil runs out of cash: Budgets are slashed, venues are closed and staff numbers are cut with transport also expected to suffer'

Wonder what ITK makes of this?

Same distance from the house to the village pub. I hardly watch TV these the new wifey uses catch up etc.

I haven't been to any county cricket this year which is out the norm.

Sports on FTA will be ever more scrace, there were dozens off new crickets leagues that started thus year and last year - the broadcasters didn't even take note off them. PSL T20 was picked up by Prime TV and became one off the most watched things that month despite needing a sat dish to watch it. Eurosport and Premier Sports are in a bidding war with each other. BPL T20 is on Premier Sports according to online sources but only Nascar and ice hockey fans pay for that channel.

Is there anything more sad, or obnoxious, than ridiculing disabled people - who have done absolutely nothing wrong, to anyone?

... apart from waste our money ?

Can we really justify spending £5.5m per Olympic medal at Rio 2016 while the rest of us slump on the sofa?

Ordinary Brits now do less than 30 minutes of exercise per week - that’s even less than we managed before London hosted the Games in 2012
