I see it the same way. It also seems to me that, given the fallibility of any justice system, supporters of the death penalty must also accept that innocent people will also die, but must consider that a price worth paying.
Reading this recently, The Americans volunteering to watch executions, I had the impression (" The room was brightly lit, and featured a large viewing window. When the curtains opened they saw the gurney. Then Buchanan entered.") that the "execution experience" must be rather like being at a theatre, another form of entertainment.

If dangerous people were locked up securely for ever, it wouldn't make a difference to anyone else if they were alive or dead.
I think some people want the death penalty as a reaction to lenient sentencing, instead of sorting out the cause.
