TOPIC: Death penalty
#160891
Death penalty 6 Years, 12 Months ago
I can never fathom how any society can approve the death penalty, especially as those in favour say the worst thing you can do is kill someone which, they think, justifies them killing someone.

I agree but think it is only a matter of time before the re introduction of the death penalty is debated, probaby decided by referundum...the main drivers: advances in dna and forensics, existential fears such as immigration, the world security situation and the fatuous level of public and media debate....

An eye for an eye.

If someone killed a relative of mine then yes I would like that bastard executed.

I think that's why we have a rule of law, Andrew.

I see it the same way. It also seems to me that, given the fallibility of any justice system, supporters of the death penalty must also accept that innocent people will also die, but must consider that a price worth paying.

Reading this recently, The Americans volunteering to watch executions, I had the impression ("The room was brightly lit, and featured a large viewing window. When the curtains opened they saw the gurney. Then Buchanan entered.") that the "execution experience" must be rather like being at a theatre, another form of entertainment.

And why,in my opinion, the views of the family or wronged person should not be considered in sentencing.

If someone has so little empathy and understanding that they need a victim statement to help hem decide, then they should have been slung out of court at the start.

If dangerous people were locked up securely for ever, it wouldn't make a difference to anyone else if they were alive or dead.

I think some people want the death penalty as a reaction to lenient sentencing, instead of sorting out the cause.
