TOPIC: Changing times
#163849
Changing times 6 Years, 9 Months ago
21 years ago, when we started this site, we got around 10,000 visits a day; as the years passed and times changed, the views count dropped slowly but surely. I noticed the Tipsheet music forum, initially the major place for visits, was overtaken by the Your Views forum on more general topics (obviously my wrongful conviction added to that). As the Internet grew and Google started, views went up again. We had to install Spam filters as the commercial products began invading, followed by trolls (instead of blocking we prefer filters - that way the views count stays high). With such sites as You Tube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and others, we've seen enormous growth in people logging on here, pointed by those others, to read longer posts like Attitudes and Opinions (I get thousands a day reading those - probably more than many national newspapers). And photos get seen by hundreds. Interesting that this scan of my acquittal in the second trial has been viewed and copied by hundreds in just a few days. Numerous pictures taken by myself or our staff get used in major global publications. We know about the movies online (now coming up for 3 million full length views on Vile Pervert: The Musical - probably more than many big budget films). How times have changed!

But sad that so few now bother to post (apart from regulars - you are appreciated). I suspect that the majority now find it easier to post short bursts on places like Twitter or Instagram and unfortunately they encourage the loonies who think in short sentences! Which is why the trolls and haters are encouraged there and have disappeared from here.

Expressing ideas succinctly is a great skill to cultivate, but 140 characters cuts it too tight for me. Unlike many these days, I'm not glued to my phone and I switch off all the notifications that tell me what people had for breakfast. I prefer more meaningful discussions, which is why I often chime in a couple of days late to threads here that pique my interest: I give matters a bit of digestion and give a considered response.

However, perhaps it's now time for a King Of Hits Twitter channel (is it called a channel? I've never used Twitter). As someone who is skilled in reading the mood of popular culture, dear host, I'm surprised you don't have one already.

Oh we do, Randall, we do; on all other social media platforms - that's from where much of the traffic gets redirected to here. Brief links to Attitudes and Opinions on here means we get thousands of views every day.
