I feel a bit like the sandwich board man who used to wander Piccadilly Circus saying the end of the world was nigh; it wasn't but as things get worse so fast I seriously expect our species to finish sooner rather than later. It has seemed on the verge of ending for ever, so I think we are ok for a while. I remember at school it was drummed into us that we were shortly going to live through an ice age, then all of a sudden it was global warming instead, so I take no notice. As one gets older time seems shorter! However optimistic I am at 72, I'll be lucky to have another ten years and very lucky to have twenty; a tiny fraction of a lifetime. Likewise the world as we know it has only really existed for a few hundred years and I reckon a few more decades to go for this species. Ants will take over.
