Playing the villain in the upcoming Gunpowder plot; for ages he's been a kind of Renta-Scouser and I've always liked him without ever knowing his name. In fact he was excellent in a George Gently I was watching last night. Always in work; always very different parts; I seem to think he's a Jimmy McGovern staple and, like Mike Leigh, that's an endorsement!
The wonderful Last Tango in Halifax; a McGovern one (Jimmy is one of my idols); all over the place and always hugely under rated. He was very good indeed on BBC News - telling a great story of how he gets in character using music and smells. As I said, I've never even known his name but whenever he pops on screen I think "Oh Good" because he tends to be in good plays. Like Gene Hackman - any movie he was in I'd go to simply because he rarely chose a wrong part in a bad film.
