"David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long," a family statement said.

Isn't this a lovely tribute from his family. Drink and drugs may have shortened his life but I think there can be nothing worse than departing from this world with a heart full of pain, bitterness and hatred.

For anyone who thinks David Cassidy did not write his own songs, this site gives a list.

"written or co-written" !

You really don't understand the music business do you?

A "co-write" usually means you give me some of the songwriting credit / royalties .... then I record your song !!!!!

Elvis didn't write most of his own songs, neither did Tom Jones, or Frank Sinatra, yet they are regarded as legends.

Cassidy had something that very few people have, star quality. Only a handful of people in pop history have had that sort of hysteria. If anyone else at the time would have performed those songs, they wouldn't have sold anywhere near as much.

One of my favourite songs that David Cassidy wrote was Frozen Noses...

Well yes, except Barry Manilow had a much bigger hit with "I write the songs" after David Cassidy did. (I read somewhere that Manilow hated it)

I dont think David Cassidy can be compared to any of the great singers (though he was technically perhaps more in tune than Sinatra! Not that it mattered) but he had a very pleasant tone, enunciated clearly, and I loved the simplicity of it, so for me, he was really good and I enjoyed most of his records.

Every generation has had one which stood out - for a very short time, usually no more than 18 months(*) - to keep the schoolgirls wet.

(*) I'm frequently now seeing One Direction CDs in charity shops for 50p !!!!

True, the shelf life of a pop star is short, however Cassidy had a string of 9 top 20 hits, including two number 1's spanning from April 1972 to October 1975. So he had a pretty good run in the limelight.

When I go a vinyl hunting in shops, I do see a lot of Backstreet Boys, New Kids On The Block more and more frequent, I see some One Direction CDs in very poor condition.

I never got the JLS thing and KISS were the first band to release their own brand of condoms not JLS.

Fully agreed - David Cassidy was great. Had some great little pop tunes which appealed to many.

Did he "take over" from Donny Osmond - whose career lasted about the same time?

The exception to this rule is Michael Jackson ... same route initially but it turned out he had lasting talent.

David Cassidy, Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson were all popular at the same time. There was room for all, possibly because a lot of the advertising was aimed at teenagers, with afternoon pop shows, lots and lots of magazines, and all three had their own tv shows.

From the age of 9, Bruce Forsyth performed (singing included) for 75 years.

I think David Cassidy was working right up to february, and Donny Osmond has been singing non stop since he was three, so its nice to know that some have a long career after being an idol.

Even Simon Turner (mentioned on the other thread) appears to be still very busy.

I wonder how many disappear after their five minutes, and how many actively try to vanish?

Bob Dylan is the most enduring, original and hardest working music artist - so busy he had to postpone his collection of the Nobel Prize.

His Never Ending Tour does over 100 performances a year - and I hope to see it again in Dublin, next May. But - the answer, my friend - is trying to get a ticket.

Now 76, his organisation does all the hard work - allowing him to pace himself and keep fit and vocally articulate. Clean living, and other interests help.

Nobody with any sense would want or expect that level of popularity for ever.
