Elvis didn't write most of his own songs, neither did Tom Jones, or Frank Sinatra, yet they are regarded as legends.
Cassidy had something that very few people have, star quality. Only a handful of people in pop history have had that sort of hysteria. If anyone else at the time would have performed those songs, they wouldn't have sold anywhere near as much.
Well yes, except Barry Manilow had a much bigger hit with "I write the songs" after David Cassidy did. (I read somewhere that Manilow hated it)
I dont think David Cassidy can be compared to any of the great singers (though he was technically perhaps more in tune than Sinatra! Not that it mattered) but he had a very pleasant tone, enunciated clearly, and I loved the simplicity of it, so for me, he was really good and I enjoyed most of his records.

They don't make em, like they used to
I think David Cassidy was working right up to february, and Donny Osmond has been singing non stop since he was three, so its nice to know that some have a long career after being an idol.
Even Simon Turner (mentioned on the other thread) appears to be still very busy.
I wonder how many disappear after their five minutes, and how many actively try to vanish?

Bob Dylan is the most enduring, original and hardest working music artist - so busy he had to postpone his collection of the Nobel Prize.
His Never Ending Tour does over 100 performances a year - and I hope to see it again in Dublin, next May. But - the answer, my friend - is trying to get a ticket.
Now 76, his organisation does all the hard work - allowing him to pace himself and keep fit and vocally articulate. Clean living, and other interests help.
'yes, and how many roads must a man walk down - before the blowing winds are achanging...how many people have died'
