On the Pier actually where it's 25°c.

Scene of Graham Greene's novel of the 30's - later made into a movie on two occasions.

Most notably with Richard Attenborough, and about London gangs who used to visit!

Then a town; now a city...

Hard to believe William Hartnell is in the original, far superior in every way, film as Dallow, Pinkie's "enforcer".

Despite trying every door into the church, Caroline finally accepted defeat and left.

G4 certainly didn't want Caroline at his coronation - but she found a door where the guards were willing to admit her.

If she had a ticket - which she did not. But her companion Lord Hood had, and he offered it to her.

However she refused and left for her Audley Street residence - dying there soon after from poisoning.

About 10 years later G4 died from sheer gluttony - and massive amounts of brandy and drugs.

You see, there are many versions of this 200 year story, in a media-free era; who can be sure what really happened!?

Re:Brighton Rock 6 Years ago
Another myth concerning the 1820 coronation is that prize fighters were hired by G4 to guard the doors of Wesminister Abbey.

To prevent Caronine attending! Totally wrong, as these were 18 bare-knuckle fighters - who acted as ushers.

Including the legendary Tom Spring who was a friend of G4, a big fan and patron of the noble art.

Which story do you believe - just the one you took as fact for decades?

Greene was catholic, as was Pinkie the book's villain - and the underlying theme is how those, of that persuasion, see right and wrong as religious opposites.

Other view them as ethical choices, with nothing to do with any religion. Because of his catholicism, Pinkie knew his murdering ways were putting him in danger of eternal damnation.

Nevertheless he couldn't stop, hating non-believers for their calm ethical and secular logic. 'These atheists; they know nothing' - he shouts.

There is some irony that the G4/Fitzherbert Brighton relationship had catholicism firmly in the mix c125 years before, albeit for different reasons.

Greene was shortlisted for the Nobel prize twice - and became a good friend of Charlie Chaplin, when both retired to Lake Geneva.

You really are pathetic !

You start by denying the facts in their entirety - just to be pedantic - then, when you (finally) realise you are wrong, spend days reading-up on the subject, then repeat it all, as if you knew all along - parrot fashion (like I said earlier ... as if reading from a cornflake packet ! )

Reading up!

I've been a member of the Recency Society since first attending one of the colleges in Brighton.

As advised so many times - if you disagree, dispute.

To just insult is childish.

One last fact on G4 - his usual breakfast:-

2 pidgeons; 3 steaks; 1 bottle of wine; 2 brandies; 1 glass of champagne; 2 glasses of port; laudinum (opium).

Close to the end, he exceeded 24 stone.

His residence at Brighton is open to the public now, the Pavilion - a few hundred yards from the sea...

Please also bear in mind that I started the thread on this fine site.

Largely to elicit further knowledge on Greene, the Brighton Rock book and movies, G4 and friends/partners, the history of the time (Lord Liverpool etc.), and the catholic/protestant angles.

All you have been able to add is old links to old and disputed garbage, which has been ignored for yonks.

You had never even mentioned him (nor Maria Fitzherbert) until I did ... then the jealousy kicked-in !

Re:Brighton Rock 6 Years ago
The thread's royal connection to Brighton was started by my reference to Victoria's father - William IV, the brother and successor of George IV.

It was later necessary for me to correct you on the legality of George's 'marriage' to Fitzherbert - which, as I pointed out, contravened two Acts.

And was void/illegal. Something you didn't seem to know - or mention! Even now, catholics are prohibited from marrying a Monarch, or immediate heir.

What a load of bollocks !

You didn't even know who Victoria's father was ... just refered to him as "her Dad" !

Adapting and changing again ... after days of reading and "changing tack".

A small bit of advice for ITK.

Links are usually/often the views of others.

Places like the world acclaimed British Library (on the Euston Road) allow people to see/read the actual documents concerned in history.

Even the Magna Carta.

But you still believe a fat lady ran around Westminster Abbey banging on all the doors...because a link says so¡

Earl of Dublin yes.

At last a correction.

Wikipedia to the rescue.

I'm happy to admit an error.

You don't do that, ever.

Off to Arsenal v Madrid....

Going into the Arsenal Tavern - W4 was G4's successor!?

But Victoria dispensed with the Pavilion.

Too near the plebs - and perhaps the most unusual building in England.

Farewell
