TOPIC: FUNGHI
#17678
FUNGHI 17 Years ago
Every time I see the Lurpak TV commercial with the man saying "whoever discovered funghi are edible, thank you" which makes me chuckle (it's SO true - whoever first thought "I'll put these in my mouth"?), reminds me how much I love edible mushrooms.

One of my favourites in Italy, where I shall soon revisit, is FUNGHI PORCINI - giant steaks of mushrooms in butter, totally historic.

Interesting point made in that commercial.

How many of are ancestors died discovering food we love in the wild?
Who was the man that unfortunately discovered Deadly Nightshade, certainly not the same one that discovered the DeathCap mushroom.

There is quite a lot of wild fungi in the woods behind us currently, but nothing edible.
The two species to mainly look out for at the moment are the St Georges Day mushroom and the Morell, I`m not suggesting people hunt for these without knowledge, but do hunt your food stores for them this time of year.
I bought Morells from Tesco in Reading a couple of years back, and they are certainly worth dieng for more than Deadly Nightshade.
It`s a good few months early for fresh Porcini, but the rumour is, they are out there already due to the strange climate.
