Put on top of that a police and CPS conviction driven not fair trial innocent until proven guilty system not a look at accusers look at conviction rates not look for the truth look for your next gold star and promotion not proving evidence but creating it.
Prisons are hell holes no matter what anyone says that they areally like hotels they are not if you took a member of the public off the street I think there would never believe the smells, noise, dirt,squalid condition where the inmates that cause the most problems get all the benefits and the ones just keeping their heads down doing their time suffer. I know, I know it's not meant to be a cosy place but you will find decent people that got into trouble for whatever reason in prison and to be honest they are never ever going to re offend the rest play the game cause the trouble and the very few good officers do not stand a chance they are on a loosing battle.
The first thing to do in UK prisons is to keep the inmates that just get on with all together on the same wings, give then their association give them time to phonew family give the a decent respect the other drug taking scum dirty rotten hard men trouble causing shitbags eff all let them live in their world but don't let them out until they behave.
Next thing is get rid of the corrupt officers do not belive the smoke and mirrors of drugs mobiles etc getting in by drone of visits that in reality is about 5% WAKE UP the other 95% comes in by bent staff it's easy money FFS get a grip and listen for once the bent corrupted officers outweigh the genuine ten fold.
So the problem is
Bent cops only conviction matters
Bent CPS only conviction matters
Bent prison staff underpaid the wrong type of person no experience tick box mentality.
Underfunded prison service
Look after the troublemakers

I sat down with a prison governer in 2009 and pointed out where the contraband was entering Wandsworth he wanted to blow that cover but was told from higher authority not to pursue it, upset the apple cart.
It will not get better before it gets worse.

It might be worth adding that we now keep twice as many people in prison as we did in 1980. Perhaps, with time and money so tight, the courts could accept fewer cases, and lock up fewer people, and the police could arrest fewer people. Of course, if they could all confine themselves to catching and imprisoning the guilty, and preferably those guilty of serious crimes for which there is serious evidence, it might be better for everyone.

You have to lock up the guilty for sure the Reiffending rate for main wing prisoners is over 75% so in real terms your are forever locking up the same people tine and time again, the Reiff ending rate for sex offenders is lower than 2% but are the most watched and controlled post release.
New wings have had to be made for sex offenders so taking away the main population cells this will cause overcrowding.

Now add in the falsely accused you may have a few thousand spaces taken up there.

It needs tearing apart and starting from scratch punish reoffenders help the ones that lost their way
