That's shocking. But how would you recommend recording the police? Do people have a legal right to do that and can they do it overtly?

(By the way, just wonder if this is how the sentence should read "...question asking why due process wasn't complaints being followed up...".)

You're quite right Jo; clumsy phrasing. And yes, one of the joys of the new technology is the ability to record conversations on smart phones at the press of a button. You'll notice many public organisations (including police) have pre recorded messages saying your call is being recorded (sometimes "for training purposes"). Police are meant to record all calls, incoming and outgoing - to protect themselves against false allegations but, since that cuts both ways, often seem to forget!
