TOPIC: The Children Act
#180757
The Children Act 5 Years, 7 Months ago
My favourite Ian McEwan novel has become a superb, intelligent film largely because of his sensitive, complex script but everyone is wonderful in it (especially Jason Watkins and, naturally, Emma Thompson). Track it down; go see it; you'll be thinking about the complex issues raised (and questions never glibly answered) for days.

Obviously the film means something more to me after I've just been through a judicial experience and thankfully was lucky enough to be in front of an intelligent, perceptive and decent judge. The film (and the book) makes very clear how difficult it must be for those in the system to retain common decency and objectivity when daily having to battle hundreds of different cases, all of which are vitally important to those involved yet which cannot consume too much of the emotional and intellectual powers of one person. Summed up, as an example, by the boy with leukaemia. And the Jehovah's Witness aspect. A truly thought provoking movie.

Odd - a couple of reviews say it is "undeniably flawed". I thought it was just about perfect.
