The history of tariffs has been one where countries developing industries impose them so imported goods will cost the same as locally made ones and thus,local industry can compete on an even level.
Tariffs are yet another one of the falsehoods of Capitalism and the belief in the alleged "free market forces" which aren't "free".
But Trump is imposing (
despite JK's admiration for his vulgar utterances
) tariffs on industries that can only hurt US customers..hundreds of millions of them. Prices will rise on everything even as wages stagnate.
Walmart for instance is slowly raising prices because all their goods are made in China. Ttump has singlehandedly devastated huge swathes of American farmers and as usual people fall for the claptrap that Trump is giving them $Billions in compensation...but it's all going to huge corporations to dish out as they feel..a bit like the dramas over British oversea's aid which people hyperventilate about and never realise that the vast majority of overseas aid goes to UK corporations.
The media is so slack now it just reports Trump's claptrap verbatim with little examination.
Three people in the pub today were claiming the "
US economy is going really well under Trump"..."
which parts " I asked. they had no answer..they simply repeat everything he says. It's just really bizarre.
Trump really is the ultimate Carnival Huckster and every single thing he does is for him and his ghastly family (saw Ivanka once at a reception-she oozes something nasty that must comes from inside- no wonder he fancies her) to make a profit and the handful of billionaires who back him.
The real mystery is- is Trump doing these destructive things purely for personal gain or does Russia really have the goods on him.
It's certainly the beginning of the end of the American Empire (it may take 50 years) ..if you read Plato's Republic it's terrifying the parallels with how the US is rapidly changing. Will it go out with a bang or a whimper.
China will have over 500 million Middle Class citizens within a 5 years while the US Middle Class is rapidly shrinking. 10 years ago China had 50 million Middle Class.
