Politicians standing up for Journalists - am I being cynical thinking they are more keen not to alienate editors and proprietors than supporting freedom of speech? Watching them clamour about the Mail's right to publish boring leaks reeks to me of self interest. this has really annoyed me. It's not a case of free speech etc..it's a matter of diplomats feeling they can fearlessly report back in confidence and knowing they have the trust of the government. Some of it isn't free speech. In some cases it is confidential and in others it is pure speculation and lies. That is what needs punishing. When politicians say, "We must be on the side of a free and fearless press." It's concerning. More so if its a Tory.
