TOPIC: Jonathan Swift and Brexit

Jonathan Swift and Brexit 4 Years, 7 Months ago
It is amazing that around 300 years ago Dean Swift (from whom I borrowed my stage name) wrote about the Brexit insanity. BigEndians go to war with LittleEndians over which end you should crack your morning egg. Who cares about the trivial details of how we trade with Europe? It is just stunningly unimportant yet it has been inflated into an issue dominating society in our tinpot little country. You really could not make it up.

Allow me to express my thoughts on Brexit. It is unimportant. How we trade, which laws we obey, what we spend our budget on; this is a complex area and one we pay politicians and civil servants to sort out. After expensive education and learning, I expect them to deal with these matters, like how large or small VAT should be, which side of the road we should drive on etc. That's why I didn't vote in the referendum. I do not know enough about it and I don't want to investigate it. Nothing to do with me; I have other personal and professional areas I'm trying to work out, with the wisdom I have gained in these areas over 74 years. Don't ask me to comment on how to play football or Formula One or how to cook a chicken except in a superficial, casual way. I certainly do not consider myself knowledgable enough to tell Marcus Rashford how to score a goal.

My two thoughts on Brexit are - the changes required probably outweigh the benefits. And there is a tiny element of racism in the Brexiteer attitude; some supporters actually don't think we should encourage foreigners to come here.

As a result I'm a casual Remainer. But most of all, I cannot understand why people are bothered or interested either way. Really, who cares?

If there is another referendum, however, I shall vote. To remain in the EU. To revoke Article 50. Simply in order to stop this absurd, expensive, divisive discussion.

My reasons for "ideologically" preferring to be out (I couldn't vote for the same reasons as you) is because I think the EU is a racist concept, and that it is morally wrong to allow the richest cleverest people from other countries to come here (so we can use them) and leave others who are worse off to rot where they are.

My idea of "out" was not what was being offered though, and I am sure everyone has different reasons for wanting one or the other, without necessarily being racist, or sore losers having a tantrum.
