A bit more effort and depth than normal in the scripting, although it did fall victim momentarily to the modern obsession with mushy sentimentality (so annoying). A very good performance by Thomas Sangster, a bright kid with much more personality than his cousin Hugh Grant. I was almost wishing that Thomas, having opened the watch which contained the Timelord's essence, would be transformed into the new Doctor, discard Martha as a piece of unecessary emotional baggage, and slip away via the Tardis to tackle even more worthy adventures.
At the end I switched off before the spoilers of next week's episode. Not sure which idiot thought those were a good thing.
It still isn't as well produced as the early series, but tonight's episode was a step in the right direction.
