I would be fascinated to know how he would depict London folk and our political class 150 years later...

Outside the norm for his era, CD was very keen on exercising and keeping fit - and would often cover more than a marathon, in a day.

Sometimes, he walked from his London home to his Rochester one in Kent - when his contemporaries travelled by coach or horseback.

CD was also somewhat unique - in that he introduced at least a dozen new words into the English language, including abuzz and doom(ed).
