TOPIC: US Presidential Election

US Presidential Election 3 Years, 6 Months ago
With over a week to go - until the election date - more than 50 million had voted.

Largely because of pandemic related issues, and more than the total number who voted in 2016.

Supreme Court involvement is a distinct probability - regarding the outcome; just like in Florida, in 2000.

Too close to call, they say - but Biden is said (by some polls) to have 52% of the vote.

I don't know much about the intricacies of the US electoral system.

Just that like in other "democracies" a minority of people in the country can seem to elect a Government - or vote for Brexit - and it goes through as somehow democratically coherent...

But anyway; what do people think about this huge early turn out to vote?

Given that the main perceived crisis in the US is Covid, surely this is a bad sign for Trump and reflects anger about this?

Well, even George W Bush got a second term after leading his county into the Iraq war - based on false information.

At the time of his reelection, this was common knowledge and virtually undisputed - yet the electorate didn't deem it relevant.

Quite.

So in contrast I am wondering if the remarkable early turn out this time indicates they see the handling of Covid as extremely relevant for this election....

Who knows? Even the candidate who get the most votes often doesn't win.

Gore and Clinton (H) got more votes than Bush (W) and Trump.

Totally different system to here; it's the Electoral College that counts.

Unusually, Georgia - in the far south east - could be the pivotal state. About the size of the UK, with only 10 million voters.

Atlanta is the capital and the black vote critical. Trump surprisingly won it the last time - Georgia has 16 in the Electoral College.

Before Trump, this state had been won by Democrats since 1992. Atlanta has 60% of the voters and both candidates will be spending time there this week.

General consensus - a 'toss-up'.

Another key swing state is the small state of Ohio (pop. 11m) - called after the river of that name, and home to 8 former presidents.

Trump took it from the Democrats last time, and the state has 18 in the Electoral College. Both candidates will be visiting Columbus this week.

This can go either way because of a long history of swinging - but significantly and usually, it picks the winner.

Said to be the most important presidential election since 1860 when Lincoln won on the slavery abolition platform.

Even though over 70 million have already voted, the candidate with the most votes is unlikely to be declared the winner.

Like 2016, when Hillary Clinton had 3 million more votes than Trump. But then, the Electoral College system kicked in.

This negates the power of the larger states (in population terms) to call the shots, giving swing/smaller states equal power.

Well worth staying up for next week, although Supreme Court involvement in the outcome is likely later.

Legal action would favour Trump dramatically because he has packed the various courts with fellow conservatives. Literally hundreds of such judges.

Not least with A C Barrett (a staunch Catholic, to the Supreme Court) - who replaced Ruth Ginsburg, who died last month aged 87. RG was a liberal Jew.

Barrett is 40 years younger than Ginsburg when she died, and like other SCOTUS judges (the majority of whom are conservatives) is there for life.

Biden and Trump will be both holding rallies today in Florida - a key state with nearly 30 Electoral College votes.

Trump's Tampa rally will be outdoors; in Tampa also, Biden will hold a drive-in rally and another in south Florida.

Level, in Florida, on 49% of the vote - Trump is holding more rallies (often 3 a day) than Biden who prefers to stay close to his Delaware home.

Over 75 million votes have now been cast - to avoid busy polling stations - and about 10 pivotal states will determine the outcome.

Traditional red and blue states are essentially being ignored.

Female voters don't like Trump - and could well be the critical factor.

Democrats candidate Hillary Clinton got 54% of their vote in 2016.

Currently, analysts are saying Biden is now at around 61%. The ladies trust him!

Unusually in Pennsylvania, Trump's people are actually knocking on doors - particularly in Pitsburgh and Philly.

Democrats call the shots in the cities there - and Trump needs the 20 electors badly. Biden leads by 5%.

Huge numbers of postal votes have been cast - causing concerns about the ability to complete the court, on schedule.

Wisconsin, another pivotal state, needs a large Democrat turnout in Milwalkie - if they're going to win it back.

Because of a major Covid spike this week - it won't be easy for Trump to win. Obama won it twice, before he arrived.

Another toss-up state - and Republicans have been prone to staying at home, for previous elections. Any thoughts anyone?

GM - as a former resident - you have nothing to say about America's most important election for 160 years?

Glad you've asked.

I have been in the states on and off in the last 4 years and I think Trump has done a great job. Yes the riots have been in Trump's tenure however these are in Democrats ran cities look at Portland. I have never liked Oregon and it's very scummy. Trump has offered to send in National Guard but has been blocked to do so, so the riots continue.

Hardly a week went by without this vile man in the media whose is a huge trouble maker, he starts fights then runs in the back of the crowds for cover. (Tosser)

Not forgetting Eric Clanton who violently attacked someone with a bike lock and got a slap on the wrist.

Consertives are blocked on social media and deny it. Two fantastic Mark Dice video's confirms it

Joe Biden reminds me of Bill Clinton...Bill loved oral sex from staff whilst Biden enjoys kids playing with hair leg.

If it was Trump making these obscene comments, media would have a field day.

So Wyot in a nutshell if Biden got in it would be like the Clinton years and Trump is like the Reagan without the wars. Harris will be the Democrats next leader and use the race card when it suit's her; I wouldn't be surprised if Republican's next leader was a lesbian or a black gay guy. I know many black, gay conserativies.

This is why cops fire guns in America and never aim for the legs that JK goes on about.

I never saw the news channels mention Blexit peaceful rally.

GM I know that I am biased against Trump because of his limited, oafish vocabulary and grand infantile narcissism.

And Biden may well be totally corrupt and a sleaze ball like Clinton.

But I had a dream about Trump's hair jumping off his head and dancing on my chest.

After a personal violaton of such proportions, I am entitled to hope Biden wins...
