And that is precisely the problem now with most debates and issues: you aren't allowded to hold that two apparantly opposing positions can be true.

We are forced in a referendum to be Brexit or Remain, we must be Biden or Trump, I am told here and elsewhere that I must come up with an alternative to lockdown if I am "anti lockdown". Saville was a "monster" or totally wronged. Sex abuse accusers must be believed or are all part of the "false allegations" industry. Drugs should all be legalised or kept criminal. Dogs are either loving or deadly. You must be City or United.

It leads to disorted or insane outcomes and stifles debate and empathy.

I found the following rather chilling observation on the Quora site :

Those who are unaware of their dark side are easier to lead into this kind of behaviour, as denial can be useful when brain-washing.

Yes that is chilling md and I am sure true. Nuance doesn't work if you are trying to spread hatred. Whether on twitter or across Europe in the middle of the last century. It comes from the same thing: seeing people as only one thing - their last post on twitter, their ethnicity, who they vote for.
