Being morbidly obese and dying of heart failure is okay. Being morbidly obese and dying of Covid is a tragedy that requires the suspension of life for everyone.

The reasons for relative UK death rates seems to me sooooo obvious. But we just can't say it can we?

Wyot, you know how people die "with" covid when it might have only played a small part?
It is the same with obesity.

Media mention mental health all the time but not suicidal deaths which are occurring because of lockdowns. Some people now panic when they see crowds of people who aren’t wearing masks. Why bother be vaccinated when you have to wear one still ?

Because the masks are crap and don't work.

Whatever the semantics of these deaths, the health of our nation (and on no construction is obesity anything but unhealthy) has been a big factor in the UK.

For me, again, the politics needs to be taken out of it. You don't protect people by trying to spare their feelings or running in fear of "labelling" people; in fact, you do the opposite.

Give people the facts and let them make their own decisions. Let's stop pretending that size is relative. It has overtaken smoking as the biggest health crisis in the country.

But you cant go from being dangerously obese (covid wise) to not at risk in a short space of time, and panicking people into crash dieting brings far worse problems than being fat.

I absolutely agree that obesity prevention should be given more importance, and there are many issues that need addressing urgently, such as mental health care, the availability and affordability of nourishing food, and the promotion and normalisation of over processed food.

It would be lovely if we were all slim and healthy, but in reality, the middle of a stupid pandemic situation is the worst possible time to badger someone into losing weight.

I agree that the atmosphere created by the way our Gov has reacted to the media coverage of Covid, has created a situation that has harmed mental and physical health, and makes addressing it much more challenging than it needs to be.

But we could at least start having an honest discussion about personal responsibility, rather than perpetuating the dangerous illusion that the State is primarily responsible for protecting our health, rather than ourselves. Cigarettes, after all, remain legal. Why this exceptional approach for this virus?
