TOPIC: The Crown

The Crown 3 Years ago
At last time to catch up on the much rated Crown; the first episode where Charles meets a schoolgirl Diana and loses his dearest friend Dicky Mountbatten. Very good so far. Netflix really has its act together.

But it reminded me of the first time I spoke to Maggie Thatcher. I hated the way the IRA were killing people and spent some time on my daily morning show on WMCA in New York, condemning them and telling New Yorkers not to give murderers any financial support.

It got quite a reaction and I gather moved me to the top of their “hit list”. I’m still here. But I was surprised to get a call from Thatcher, then Prime Minister, thanking me genuinely and telling me how decent, brave and honest she thought I had been.

I was flattered. Though not a supporter it was one of the few things we agreed on.

Some years later I met her and we got on like a house on fire. I admired her enormously and found her very witty and funny (which everyone else didn’t). I disagreed with about 80% of her policies but, rather like Jeremy Corbyn, I admired her integrity, honesty and decency.

I’m also becoming a massive Gillian Anderson fan. Loved her in Bleak House. She captures Maggie perfectly.

The Fagan episode excellent; love the actor who played Fagan; seen him in other stuff though cannot remember his name; he is really good.

My God this series is good. When I've finished watching it I shall go back to all the earlier ones. Fantastic writing; great acting (they really got all the best British actors, didn't they?). No wonder it's won so many awards with many more to come. The only problem I have is - why Netflix? Why not the BBC, especially for a series on the British royalty? Might they not have gotten away with it? The Margaret episode is terrific; so is the Apartheid one.
