TOPIC: Seagulls invading London
#21255
Seagulls invading London 16 Years, 8 Months ago
Where is Alfred Hitchcock when you need him?
I have had close experience with seagulls - awful birds, horrid creatures.
I lived next to them for 8 months at HMP Elmley in Sheppey and loathed the damn things.

And I actually like most birds and put out bird seed for them.

Agreed.

Is it just me, or have they actually got substantially larger in recent years.

There have actually been instances of seagulls pecking people's heads around here causing them to need stitches- I kid you not!

I don't have much experience of seagulls, living about as far as you can get from the sea in the UK. I do recall being interested in a flock of them which followed us for the entire ferry trip between Athens and Aegina. Reminded me of Eric Cantona's seagulls following the trawler quote.

One was filmed shoplifting last week. It just brazenly walked into a shop and stole a bag of Doritos. I blame the parents.

They can`t technically get larger, you just may have a different gull in your area Marcus, than before.
The biggest gull in the UK, is the Great Black backed Gull, but the commonest big one you are likely to see is the Herring Gull, which are noisy scavenging swines that can live up to 35 years old.
Species of gulls tend to be very regional, and the commonest down where I live is the Black headed Gull, which strangely enough has a brown head.
Even more odd, is that the gull you are least likely to see, is called the Common Gull.

On a food note (you knew you`d get one...!), gulls eggs are supposed to be very nice, and are often served at the River Cafe on Thames Wharf.

(too much ornithological knowledge in my head sadly,or not,but we very rarely have a birding thread.)

I wonder what sort of bird Humpty Dumpty would have turned out to be.
Harry Hill, circa 2001.

Not even original. I'll get me coat.
