Robbie Coltrane on ITV last night 16 Years, 8 Months ago
I was looking forward to it - I like him as an actor and enjoy gentle ramblings around countries and musings upon them.

But I hated this. Robbie came across as very uninterested and superficial with a dreadful, obvious script. It actually looked like a very bad photocopy of Entertainment USA I thought.

Copying the basic idea and format but not having any charm or originality.

Whether or not I had charm over the 1980's series I cannot objectively say, but nobody had done it before way back then.

A terrible disappointment (I love asparagus too but he almost put me off the stuff with his fake enthusiasm and unattractive way of eating it with spears the wrong way round).

The whole output from ITV is just a pathetic copy these days.

They copied the genealogical prog from the Beeb and made a very bad job of it.

Their latest - Britain's favourite view - is a pathetic imitation of the much better progs produced by the Beeb, such as Coast / Mountain / that David Dimbleby one (and the title sequence of Britain;s favourite view is a sham imitation of the Dimbleby credits too !)

Not wanting to massage your ego (!) JK, but at the very least E-USA was educational and informative as well as ENTERTAINING! - I still remember a lot of the interviews and packages within it and value them a great deal.

ITV these days are none of the above. Very, very sad.

Entertainment USA was superb television, and we've not had anything like it since. I remember it being on a Thursday night/ Friday night, and would video it avidly along with Top Of The Pops of course. It was JK who made the show; never dull, and he said what he thought. I remember his unfortunate interview with Frankie Goes To Hollywood back in '84. JK commented after the interview on the show itself 'I found them childish and irritating...' or words to that effect.

It got 10 million viewers every week, which for BBC 2 was oustanding...only repeats of Fawlty Towers and snooker rivalled it.

TV needs a programme of it's ilk back - even as the world is a much smaller place then back in the 1980s.
