I’ve always loved Rome for over 65 years - and I frequently drive along Cristoforo Columbo - the road to Ostia - straight as an arrow; lined all the way with tall trees; and several miles to the sea you can see it stretched out before you. As the Romans used to, coming here in their chariots to spend a day on the black sand volcanic beach.
And so do I. It’s a Rolls Royce instead of a chariot but it works just as well.
It’s my favourite road in the world. That might sound odd, having a favourite road, but you need to be here.
Just as my favourite restaurant view is Sibilla’s in Tivoli. There is nowhere like it. I’ve been coming here for 60 years and knew the owner when he was the small child of his parents. Now his son also works here.
I always sit where Napoleon used to sit. His favourite restaurant too.
My friend Samson proposed to his now wife Monica in the very temple of the oracle, Sybil, when I brought them here years ago.
Very romantic.
