But worse is when so many of US - often without realising - play the same game. It should not be impossible to care about both grieving parents and friends and family AND the mad loony - but 99% of punters seem to find that impossible.
I am reading an incredibly interesting book about the brain and society, "The Matter With Things" by Dr Iain McGilchrist.
He explains that - basically and crudely - the left hemisphere used to and should "serve" the right hemisphere; but has come to dominate and ignore the right hemisphere.
The left hemisphere is linear, hermetic, inward looking, and loves to put everything in a box. Black and white etc.
The right, by contrast, is concerned with a 360 degree view of the world, is subtle and appreciates nuance, is wise and can hold contradictory views. It emphasises empathy, beauty and art.
The author argues that the way we have set up our societies and live our lives means that the left increasingly dominates.
The left would NEVER allow empathy for the Stockport loon as well as the grieving families. It literally would be blind to even the concept.
It is interesting - and not at all difficult - to spot "left" and "right" leaning hemisphere led posters on here.
And of course a brief persual of twitter will show which dominates online!

Some might say that Starmer himself is currently engaged in one of the biggest British massacres of all time and he doesn't need a gun or a knife to do it.
Yet, Axel is one of many, do you remember that even if somebody got cut by a knife in the street, it would be in the paper as it was rare?
Now the media only report if there is mutiple killings like Southport or when a lad gets knifed. If the latter is Black on Black or over drugs it gets buried then forgotten.
There could have been another Southport massacre in an ASDA in Croydon, if it wasn't for the people tackling the nutter. The media now downplay things by saying "they were known to each other" if there is killing or an assualt by a knife.
It does not matter if people were known to each other. I see more compassion on social media posts, if they are written by those are parents.
I have said before on here. I was no saint as a kid but when he had knifes it was used for whittling, cutting branches in the woods. If we got in fist fights it was always one on one, and grudges were settled in a few minutes. No knives were never used, we even had respect for our elders and the Garda, there one Garda who lived locally if we wasn't on duty he would help out building dens with us.
He respected us and we respected him, if we would even bring his own tools which were miles better than little our budget DIY sets.
However, if we stepped out of line the officer would give us a solid clip round the ear or the back of the head.
There was no need to tell our parents about the slap, as our parents would hit us for back chatting.
I can still remember the sting of my father's hefty belt buckle going across my knee caps.
people need to ask why there is no strong male role models at home anymore. Parents were not friends, as they seem to be these days. There is one youngish father who goes to my local who calls all his children "mate".
