Let's all feel sorry for Charles Clarke ! 18 Years ago
He's only human ! All this fuss ! Anyone can make a mistake !

After all - he has been very busy. He's introduced over a dozen Terrorist Bills (which take away the freedoms of innocent people) so can hardly be expected to deal with REAL criminals as well, can he ?

However, I did warm to him last night on Newsnight as he totally disarmed Paxo by holding his hands up and doing the whole mia culpa thing.

Sir David Ramsbotham brilliant on BBC breakfast TV 18 Years ago
he predicted all this SIX YEARS AGO!
I was in regular correspondence with Sir David and found him very sensible and intelligent.
He suggested one person in charge of foreign nationals.
Rejected.
We are reaching meltdown in the entire judicial/police/prisons estate.
Because nobody listens.

This latest episode is (to borrow a McCarthyist catch phrase) just the tip of the iceberg. You can sack Clarke tomorrow and his successor next week after another cock-up. You can even play musical ministers. But none of that will change the dominant culture and mentality or the perverse priorities it generates.

This is not just about terrorism. It's also about the witch hunt for Britain's 'paedophiles'; but the greatest monster is the unwieldy, insatiable police state. It starts with tabloid populism dictating policy, then the law becomes an ass with diarrhoea. New Labour, new laws; everyone's a crim now baby. Two 15-year-olds snogging behind the bike sheds is enough to get them both branded as 'child sex offenders' and barred from teaching for life. Could there be an old copy of The Sun from the early 80s in your attic, with Samantha Fox on Page 3? Then you're in possession of 'child porn' because she was 17 at the time.

You can already see how easily anybody in authority who wants to wage a vendetta against a big name - or a small one - can find the necessary ammunition and paint a certain picture.

In the big picture, Social Services can't afford enough home visits or staff training to save a child from being battered to death. Yet they've got money to burn on inquisitions into why a male carer changed a girl's nappy (Duh! so I was supposed to leave her in that state for 4 hours until female staff came on duty).

These are the prices that are paid when paranoia dictates priorities. When resources are chasing people who don't need protection and people they don't need protecting from, resources for people who do need protection are too little and too late.
